Hobie releases new eVolve electric drive for all MirageDrive kayaks PDF Print E-mail

Hobie’s new motor system lets you pedal, power and fish at the same time.

Hobie has just released the new eVolve electric drive as an optional accessory for all of its MirageDrive kayaks and Pro Angler fishing boats.

The unique thing about this system is that it offers a 2-in-1 option, coming with one mount that slips into Hobie’s MirageDrive pedal well and a second one that fits onto any Hobie Twist and Stow rudder.eVolve2When using the rudder-mounted motor, you can use it by itself or combine it with the MirageDrive pedal system for extra propulsion and added range, allowing anglers to make use of both forms of propulsion. In the words of Hobie pro angler Morgan Promnitz,

I use the eVolve to cover the two-mile stretch of water separating me from my favorite fishing spot. Once out there, I like to use the stealth of the MirageDrive, but periodically use the eVovle to move to different areas. If I see birds diving half a mile away, I am the first kayaker to inspect the feeding frenzy. When I need that extra burst of speed without exerting any energy, the eVolve is the answer. I put the eVolve into gear and sit back enjoying my surroundings.

This system was designed by Hobie but uses a Torqeedo electric motor. Hobie promises a “quiet, efficient and emissions-free motor.”A remote throttle display attaches to the side hull near the seat of the kayaks or onto the side rail of the Pro Angler. It controls the throttle and displays charge status, distance remaining, speed over ground and power consumption in watts. The throttle pad is also equipped with a magnetic key pad for safety shut-off and to prevent theft.

A 230-watt Lithium Manganese Battery/Computer is the heart that pumps the power to the motor. At only 6.6 pounds, it has a built-in GPS for speed calculations, is completely watertight and will even float.

The total weight of the installed kit is 18 pounds.

At full charge, the battery will perform for up to eight hours at 2MPH cruising speed. When all components are connected, they are IP68 watertight (international standard for marine electronics).

The accessory kit includes the following parts:

* Ready-to-go Hobie eVolve with Torqeedo motor for mounting in the MirageDrive well
* Second Hobie eVolve assembly to adapt the Torqeedo motor to fit the Hobie Twist and Stow rudder
* Sealed and waterproofed Lithium Manganese performance Battery/Computer with charger
* Remote throttle with LCD display showing range/speed data generated using onboard GPS
* Safety shut-off key
* Waterproof components and cable connectors
* Corrosion-resistant materials and motor design
* Cables for motor and throttle
* All mounting hardware

The Hobie eVolve will be available at retail stores in November.

Price: $1,899 US
