The Crate Mate Jr

The Crate Mate Jr. is the king of organization; with rod holders and leashes attached you can make your kayak a fishing kayak without even drilling a single hole. Designed to fit in most tankwells, it is a must have. For more info visit http://www.3rdgrip.com

Small Belt Pouch From Aquaskinz

Also along the lines of great storage ideas is the Small Belt Pouch From Aquaskinz, this little pouch at only 8” X 6” gives a great you a places for hands on access to leaders, bucktails, rubber baits and other terminal tackle. It is made to fasten right onto to your seat strap and small enough to never be in your paddles stroke. For more info visit http://www.aquaskinz.com

The Hydrostar Light

You can never have enough good safety gear, the Hydrostar Light is the best light made for the kayak, it easily fastens to the deck of your yak and doubles as a flashlight. The versatility of this multifunction LED design includes a flashlight with three brightness settings, a strobe, and a red/green marker light.  For more info visit http://www.seattlesportsco.com

The Rapala’s ProGuide Pliers

Any craftsman knows how valuable good tools are; the same applies to kayak fishing. Rapala’s ProGuide Pliers are made tough with stainless steel construction that can cut braided line or work the hook out of a barracuda. Features like a split ring tool, soft handles and spring loader makes it a great choice for your go to tool on the water. I have had mine for 2 years with no signs of rust or malfunction.

The Economy Lip Gripper by Lipper Tools

I am also am a fan of good value, as well performance and the Economy Lip Gripper by Lipper Tools is just that! Constructed from aluminum, ABS plastic and stainless steel landing jaws. This EconoScale weighs up to 15 lbs. This model is virtually saltwater resistant with a minimum of care. Hard to imagine you get all this for about $18. They also have version that weigh up to 50 lbs. for more info visit http://www.evolutionproductsinc.com

The Sterns Inflatable Chest Pack

I call the Sterns Inflatable Chest Pack, the PFD for people who don’t want to wear a PFD. Manual CO2 inflation by pulling lanyard. Back shoulder pad can be adjusted for neck and head support once inflated. USCG approved Type V for use as a Type III. Large tray pocket makes it a great gear organizer as was as safety item. For more info visit http://www.stearnsinc.com

The SKWOOSH™ Comfort Cushion

If you’re not comfortable on the water, you’re not going to want to fish. I have found that this little item has made a big difference for me and can be used with any kayak – sit inside or sit on top. The SKWOOSH™people use terms like “medically proven pressure relieving technology to make paddling more comfortable”, I am not sure about all that stuff but I do know it makes a difference for me on the water. It provides this added cushion with a low profile that will not get you too elevated while paddling. For more info visit http://www.skwoosh.com

Grass shrimp are the key to the Northeast marsh bite PDF Print E-mail

HIT THE SHRIMP HATCH
By Captain John McMurray

Grass shrimp are the key to the Northeast marsh bite

It was one of those mornings - there was zero wind and the fog was so thick you couldn’t see 30-feet in front of you.  We putted along at just a little above idle as David stood on the bow ready to scream at the top of his lungs if he saw an obstruction.  “Are you sure this is safe?” David shouted, half-joking.  “Quit being such a wimp,” I yelled back, but I was starting to doubt whether it was safe as small droplets of rain began to patter against my slicker and the rumbling of other hapless boaters sidetracked my concentration.   “Woe, woe, woe” David shouted, as marsh grass appeared like a ghost 35-feet off the bow.  I turned the wheel hard right, cut the engine, and said, “We’re here,” pretending I knew that the grass-flat was at exactly this spot.  Looking at me questioningly, David moved to the rod holder and unstrapped his 7-weight.  “What fly should I use?” he asked, almost quivering in anticipation.  I pointed to the water and David looked down.  For the past week, there had been thousands and thousands of tiny grass-shrimp in these flats, and the stripers and weakfish had been sipping them up like trout during a mayfly hatch.  While there was a lot of bait around, the fishing had been tough.  In fact, there was too much bait around, and it wasn’t easy to get these fish to take a look at your offering.  Nevertheless, we’d had some success.

The New Nantucket Sleigh Ride PDF Print E-mail
The most extreme kayak angler may be Chicago futures and options trader Dave Lamoureux, who paddles a modified 12-foot-long recreational kayak off the tip of Cape Cod in pursuit of bluefin tuna. He’s had strikes powerful enough to tow him at 15 mph—a contemporary variation of a whale pulling a whaling boat in what Herman Melville described as a Nantucket sleigh ride. In November Lamoureux reeled in his biggest catch to date—a 157-pound bluefin (above). “Tuna are so big and fast,” he says, “the initial hit is extremely violent. I’ve had my kayak cracked

The Gullwing Fishing Kayak Paddle PDF Print E-mail
The Gullwing Fishing Kayak Paddle

What I like about it is that it looks VERY easy to use, and rounded/arched construction will provide power, as well as NOT ROLL AROUND when i set it down to cast. This is a huge bonus to the shallow water kayak fisherman, as there’s NOTHING worse than banging a straight battle off of your boat when you set it down. You scare every fish for 200 square miles around you.

From their website:

"So beginning with the blade design, I built one benefit-laden feature onto another to develop the Gullwing kayak paddle. To list a few: angled blades that cut just below the water surface for glide rather than heavy dipping … changeable blades … bowed handle contoured like a kayak’s prow made of powder-coated aluminum for lightweight paddling and improved grip … And above all, an ergonomic design for hours of fatigue-free paddling.

The Gullwing has been warmly welcomed by would-be paddlers with a variety of physical challenges, but it is being enthusiastically received, as well, by young families and weekend kayakers, by salt water and freshwater kayak enthusiasts of all ages and physical abilities. And me? I’m out on the water for hours at a time with no pain. Count me as one who’d rather glide than dig."

East Coast Kayak Fishing - Gear of the year 2009 - YakAttack VISIPOLE! PDF Print E-mail

The importance of being seen on the water can never be overstated and after some close experiences with boaters I will spare no expense to make my kayak and I as visible as possible. I have used the VISI Pole for a while now and it truly is on my must have list of kayak fishing safety items.

The VISI Pole gives off an enormous amount of light and offers you visibility on the water that is required for safe night fishing and kayaking. The VISI Pole certainly adds some extra light around your kayak and is visible from a greater distance than most other lights I have used. The trick with any light is to find the balance between brightness and burn-time.  I still have not changed the original 3 AAA batteries and I used the light over 70 hours so far and it is still going strong. The creators of light over at Yak Attack (www.yakattack.us) say it is waterproof to 1000 feet; I would like to know who tested it to find out, but I am confident that it will stand up to any salt spray or occasional dunking that might happen. The VISI Pole also doubles as a flag for daytime fishing.

Certerpin Angling - Float Angling is taking off! PDF Print E-mail

Centerpin fishing, also called float fishing, is a fishing technique which uses a mooching rod, reel and fly. The method is used behind boats for steelhead fishing in salt water, and is currently popular with freshwater salmon anglers who drift their boat down a river.

Although centerpinners (sometimes called "pinners") use a fly, it is not really fly fishing, which involves more skill and less salmon roe. Centerpin rods are generally better for catch and keep fisheries, such as salmon, because the long lengths of line and lack of drag make it much harder to release the fish unharmed. The technique originated in Europe. It is a stealthy method of fishing, effective for catching many of the highly prized European rough fish.

The program allows the participants a chance to decompress from the stresses associated with combat and the physical rigors of rehabilitation. Participants enjoy these benefits while on guided fishing trips held at various locations around the country.

Kayak Camping PDF Print E-mail

Kayak camping, backpacking, bicycle touring, luxury travel, business travel, being homeless all involve packing a selection of stuff in such a way as to be portable and organized. As far as I see it, the two main cosmic packing guidelines are:

  1. Ability to carry safely and comfortably.
  2. Packed in such a way as to find what you want when you want to without unpacking everything.

You should pack enough stuff to be comfortable and safe while providing enough function to cover a predictable range of scenarios. The balance, or Art of Packing always starts with selecting what you absolutely need from what you don't. Another consideration is "relative" comfort. I am the kind of packer who would prefer to sacrifice a little comfort to carry what I want, such as luxury items. Other people prefer to be extremely light. I suggest trying both methods and see what you prefer. Is it better to suffer a little getting your gear there and then be really comfy in your big tent and fuzzy slippers, or is it better to be more comfortable getting there, and then suffer with your one man bivvy sack and freeze dried Chicken "cardboard" Fettuccini? It is a personal choice. What is not personal is safety, you should carry enough equipment so that you feel prepared for the worst, and feel safe.
